Weaving together the activities of a Druidic society circa 50 CE in Britain with the present-day tensions between archaeologists, urban developers and land protectors, "Bog Queen" is a super read~! I especially appreciated the animist voice of the "moss speaking" that runs throughout the narrative - so well done.

The artifacts of the past are all around us, and deserve to be treated with respect and care. And as a society we need to accommodate the "sensitives" among us, who instinctively remember the Old Ways and are open to the voices from other realms.

the tortoise's tale - Kendra coulter

"The Tortoise's Tale" is a phenomenal book ~ I highly recommend this one~! It is extremely hard to avoid anthropomorphization when creating an other-than-human character, but Coulter for the most part achieves this. The plausibility of a long-living tortoise having a caring nature, a loving heart, a respect for all life, and a monumental intelligence can be true indeed, and the tortoise's personality - full of warmth and grace - is so on track. What I love is how all the animals in the story - plus a few rare humans - embody the interconnectedness and reciprocity that is at the heart of Earth Community. Coulter's long career in the animal rights movement, and her excellent understanding of nature glows on every page. For a first novel it is superb - one literally cannot put it down (!) and I'm so glad to see the popularity of this book soaring. My only critique is that if a tortoise such as this one has a genius intellect, would she not know where she was from? Displaced from her homeland as a tiny baby, she spends decades wondering where her place is, and her own kind. But then, as she discovers it is a place called "Galápagos" - what meaning would a colonial name have for her origin place anyway? Tortoises in situ would hardly call their environment by a human name. Anyway, this is just a small glitch (for me) in a ground-breaking work overall, and a treasure within the nascent "interspecies genre" for years to come.
