TRIBAL THEORY GLOBAL ~ Making Meaning of Adversity, Crisis and Trauma

 WHAT IS TRIBAL THEORY GLOBAL?
Tribal Theory Global is an intriguing universal sociological framework that is rapidly being adopted to support the healing practices of crisis, adversity, and trauma worldwide. Created by Barbara Allyn, a Canadian trauma specialist and crisis intervenor, Tribal Theory Global is a universally adapting model that, unlike conventional Western methods, is not only non-colonial, but actively decolonial. It challenges the Western pathologizing of people, which says that there is something wrong with us, and instead witnesses what has happened to us and our human, spiritual, cultural, primal, physical, and philosophical responses to those experiences. Her recent book, The Genius of Anxiety, Depression & Trauma, is being described as a paradigm shift in how we walk, perceive, and respond at a cellular level to our world experiences. It acknowledges traditional and cultural healing practices outside of the Western lens.

Tribal Theory created by Barbara Allyn is based on how Indigenous and pre-colonial societies were organized for millennia.     A brilliant way to sort people in "types" as it were,   it rings true for me like no other framework. I was a "Hunter" in my younger years, but I have always been at heart a "Homebody."  From the PDF: "As trauma-response approaches have evolved over the past forty years, it’s become clear that not all interventions are equal when it comes to real post-traumatic growth. Our new understanding of experiential trauma and phases of trauma-recovery reveals unintended re-traumatizing creating more harm than good.  Tribal Theory was created to identify individual responses to trauma, address real moral injury, and speak directly not to what is 'wrong' with people, but ‘what happened’ to them. This framework changes people’s story and understanding, from victim-based repetition to strengthen-based direction, and focus."

HOW DOES IT HELP?
dis-placed, dis-ordered, dis-eased
Tribal Theory helps us recognize + re-discover our authentic place in the social tribe. Understanding this "role" helps create meaning, purpose + a sense of belonging. We no longer feel displaced, or like a ‘misfit’ once we can see our authentic role in context. We are now able to re-create + own our story of adversity, including strategies of coping + resilience.

Making Meaning of Adversity, Crisis + Trauma on the path towards post-traumatic growth.  Tribal Theory assists healing of individuals presenting with maladaptive displacement responses including: PTSD, OCD, ADHD, Generalized Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Psychosis, Self-harm, Sleep Deprivation, Low Self-Esteem + Self-Worth.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
tribal roles

Tribal Theory is a therapeutic framework based on the idea that people are not "broken" but have been "displaced." It is demonstrated by a simple pattern of three circles representing a tribe, with Hunter roles, Homebody roles + Guard positions.  Everyone has an authentic role (and a shared Guard position) in the Tribe. If a person is "pushed" or "forced" out of their authentic role in response to a crisis or adverse event, maladaptive behaviours like anxiety, OCD, and depression may occur.  By understanding where our "place" is in the Tribe, + that a reaction to trauma or crisis may have caused us to take on a role that has moved us out of our authentic place, we feel "displaced" and feel the need to be a vigilant "fear guard."

We live in what we pridefully call civilization, but our laws and machines have taken on a live of their own; they stand against our spiritual and physical survival.

If  what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
    you are surely lost.
    Stand still.
    The forest knows

    You must let
    it find you

    They saw magic....
    It is not so much
the Birch Tree  that is important as it is....
seeing the magic in the Birch, its soul qualities.
